Technical Note 06
Eminence Designer 1 Disappears or No Longer Runs

Eminence Designer 1 uses many of the same system files as other programs. If Eminence Designer ever stops working or disappears from the "Start" menu, it probably means that another program has changed or deleted one or more of these system files or registry settings. It is important to determine which program caused this. Try to remember what changes have been made to your computer since Eminence Designer last worked. What programs were installed?

Solving a problem like this is a process of elimination. Begin by removing the most recently added program or undoing the most recent system changes. Then test Eminence Designer to see if it works. Continue this process until either Eminence Designer begins to work normally again or until the system has been fully restored.

Another source of trouble are computer viruses. An "infected" computer may not be able to run Eminence Designer. It is important to use up-to-date antivirus software. If your computer is infected, you will need to correct this problem before you can expect Eminence Designer to function properly.

If the preceding steps have been taken and Eminence Designer still doesn't work, try removing it with the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Windows Control Panel and then re-installing it with your original installation CD. Once you have determined the cause of the problem, please contact us and let us know what you found so we can investigate further and try to prevent it from happening again in the future.

Why do some programs interfere with others? Some installation programs or "setups" do not follow the industry-standard rules for system file installation. In general, a system file should only be installed on a computer if one of two conditions are present: 1) the system file does not already exist on the computer, or 2) an older copy of the system file exists on the computer. Unfortunately some installation programs will replace newer existing system files with older copies of the same file. This can wreak havoc with other programs that share the same system file.
